What is clinical DNA testing?

Clinical DNA testing is a medical test that examines specific genes to look for genetic variation that may impact your health. This testing can provide insights into:

Hereditary health conditions: Identifying genetic factors that may increase the likelihood of developing certain conditions, such as cancer or heart disease.

Medication response: Understanding how your body may process certain medications to help guide treatment decisions.

Genetic ancestry and traits: Exploring information about your genetic origins and fun genetic insights about your personal characteristics.

How can DNA testing help you?

Your clinical DNA testing can help you better understand your health and make better choices for yourself, and possibly your family. If you have a higher chance of a condition, you and your doctor or healthcare provider can take steps to prevent or catch disease early, when they're easier to treat. Learning about how your DNA impacts your medication response can help you and your doctors find the right medicines for you.

Common Questions

What are the possible results?

Most people receive a negative result.

This means no important genetic changes were found in the tested genes. No increased risk for hereditary conditions was detected.

A small percentage of people receive a positive result.

This means a meaningful genetic change was found that could affect your health.

Why is this information important?

If you have a higher chance of a condition, you and your doctor or healthcare provider can take steps to prevent it or catch it early, when treatment works best.

Are there any protections against discrimination based on these results?

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) makes it illegal for health insurance companies and employers to discriminate based on genetic information. This includes your clinical DNA testing results.*
